Product Introduction

 

Calcium carbide is a grayish - black or brownish - black crystalline solid. It is a highly reactive inorganic compound.

 

It is mainly produced by heating a mixture of lime (calcium oxide) and coke in an electric arc furnace at extremely high temperatures (around 2000°C).

 

When it comes into contact with water, it reacts vigorously. This reaction produces acetylene gas and calcium hydroxide. This exothermic reaction is the basis for its wide - use in acetylene production, which is crucial for many industrial processes.

Product Application

• Acetylene Production: The primary use. The water - reaction generates acetylene, a key gas for metal cutting/welding (in construction, shipbuilding). Also used to make organic chemicals like vinyl chloride (for PVC) and acetaldehyde.
• Steel Industry: Acts as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer. Removes oxygen/sulfur impurities in steel - making, improving steel quality and reducing brittleness.
