Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the world's second largest general purpose resin, as early as 1835 French chemist Regnault found that under sunlight, vinyl chloride polymerization into a white solid. In 1914, chemists in Germany and the United States discovered that organic peroxides could accelerate the polymerization of vinyl chloride. In 1931, the German Farben Chemicalbook company adopted the method of emulsion polymerization to realize the industrialization of PVC production. Emulsion polymerization is the vinyl chloride monomer and water, with sodium alkyl sulfonate (surfactant) as emulsifier, so that vinyl chloride uniformly dispersed in the water to form an emulsion, and then potassium persulfate or ammonium persulfate as the initiator, so that vinyl chloride polymerization into polyvinyl chloride.
