Sodium saccharin is the first artificially synthesized non-nutritive sweetener. It is soluble in water and has a sweetness of 200 to 500 times that of sucrose in a dilute solution. It has a bitter taste when the concentration is high. It is sweet when heated under acidic conditions. Because of its low calorie, not absorbed by the body, and can be discharged automatically with urine and feces, it is used as a sugar substitute by patients with obesity, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and dental caries.
