The main components of rosin are resin acids, accounting for about 85-90%, and the rest are fatty acids and neutral substances. Resin acids have a tricyclic phenanthrene skeleton and a monocarboxylic acid with two double bonds (molecular formula C20H30O2), but different structures of slash pinic acid and south pinic acid with two carboxyl groups have also been found. There are 13 main types of resin acids with determined structures. Usually, resin acids are divided into two main types: abietic resin acids and pimaric resin acids according to the different positions of the double bonds in the resin acid structure and the different substituents connected to C-13. Abietic resin acids are connected to an isopropyl group at the C-13 position, have conjugated double bonds, are easily isomerized by heat or acid, are easily oxidized, and show a strong absorption spectrum in the ultraviolet region. Pimarinic resin acids (8-11 in the figure) are connected to a methyl group and a vinyl group at the C-13 position. The two double bonds are non-conjugated, so they are relatively stable to heat and acid isomerization, and have weak absorption in the ultraviolet region. The fatty acid content of fatty acid in fat rosin is less than 6%, and the content in floating oil rosin is higher. The saturated fatty acids contained include lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, etc., among which palmitic acid is the main. Unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid, etc., account for about 80-90% of the total fatty acid content. Neutral substance rosin contains 6-7% neutral substances, and its composition is extremely complex. It is mainly composed of monoterpenes, monoterpene alcohols, sesquiterpenes, diterpene hydrocarbons, diterpene aldehydes and diterpene alcohols.
