   Calcium carbide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CaC2. It is the main component of calcium carbide and is a white crystalline powder. Industrial products are gray black block shaped, with a purple or gray cross-section. Immediately react violently with water, producing acetylene and releasing heat. Application : 
1. Acetylene generated by the reaction of calcium carbide and water can be used to synthesize many organic compounds, such as synthetic rubber, synthetic resins, acetone, ketones, carbon black, etc; Acetylene oxide flame is widely used for welding and cutting of metals.
2. When heating powdered calcium carbide and nitrogen gas, the reaction produces calcium cyanamide, also known as lime nitrogen:
CaC2 + N2 → CaCN2 + C ,  ΔH = -296kJ/mol
Lime nitrogen is an important raw material for the preparation of cyanamide. The melt generated by the reaction of lime nitrogen and salt is used in gold mining and non-ferrous metal industry.
3. Calcium carbide itself can be used as a desulfurizer in the steel industry.
4. The production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is carried out by the calcium carbide method, which uses calcium carbide (CaC2) to generate acetylene (C2H2) when it comes into contact with water. Acetylene is then combined with hydrogen chloride (HCl) to produce vinyl chloride monomer (CH2=CHCl), which is then polymerized to produce polyvinyl chloride - [CH2-CHCI] n.
